Vitamin C:

Vitamin C is an essential vitamin for health that is well known for its cold and flu fighting abilities and antioxidant effects. 

As it is essential, this means we need to get it from our diet or supplement form because our body does not produce it, unlike many other mammals. 

Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory that has the ability to destroy all virus organisms. In order to kill viruses higher doses of vitamin C are typically required. Vitamin C can help to boost both the innate and adaptive immune system by activating neutrophils (white blood cells), stimulating interferon and antibody production in the body, and protecting against oxidative damage (1). Vitamin C may help to prevent and treat infections while also shortening the duration of the common cold or flu (2)

As a potent antioxidant, vitamin C may also help to support sperm health by protecting sperm cells against oxidative stress and improving sperm count and motility (3)(4).

 

Magnesium: 

Magnesium represents a commonly deficient mineral, as it is flushed out of the system by caffeine, alcohol, diuretics, medications, excessive exercising, diarrhea, and even chronic stress. A compromised gut also influences our ability to absorb magnesium, and these challenges only increase with age.

Magnesium is an important mineral in modulating the stress response, maintaining bone elasticity, and supporting cardiovascular health (5). This mineral is involved in over 300 enzyme systems and is required for a significant amount of reactions in the body.  

Men over the age of 50 are also more susceptible to low magnesium levels. 

Low levels of magnesium are associated with increased markers of inflammation, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and Alzheimer’s disease. 

Increasing your magnesium intake to reach sufficient levels by the body can help to raise testosterone levels in men (6), improve energy, and may even reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease (7).

You can find magnesium in foods such as leafy green vegetables, dried apricots, brown rice, almonds, pecans, cashews, and brazil nuts. However, soil depletion and the processing of foods such as grains can deplete magnesium levels found in foods today therefore supplementation is often recommended.

 

Vitamin D:

Vitamin D deficiency is quite common especially if you live farther away from the equator and do not get sufficient sunlight exposure.

Vitamin D is an important vitamin needed for optimal immune function, bone health, skin health, mental health, and many more functions in the body.

Form of the vitamin or mineral

Vitamins and minerals can come in many forms and this will affect how they act in the body by impacting their rate of absorption.

Prime examples are vitamin B12, magnesium and folic acid.

Cyanocobalamin is the most common form of vitamin B12 found in supplements, however it has to first be converted in the body to methylcobalamin, and this process may be compromised in many people. Methylcobalamin is the active form of the vitamin and can be used by the body more efficiently.

Folic acid is the synthetic version of vitamin B9 which is the inactive form of the vitamin and not easily utilized in the body as it must be converted into 5-MTHF before entering the bloodstream. Folic acid is the cheaper form of vitamin B9 which is why it is found in most supplements however the active form 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF) is what you want to look for, especially if you do have the MTHFR mutation which can be tested for.

Magnesium comes in a variety of forms which will have different uses and effects in the body.

The least absorbable form is magnesium oxide which can benefit those experiencing constipation as it is poorly absorbed in the intestinal tract. For more absorbable and effective forms you can opt for magnesium bisglycinate, citrate, malate, and threonate.

 

Dosing

Some multi vitamins will require a significant amount of capsules per day which can be a dealbreaker for many people who are already taking supplements or have trouble remembering them. Pay attention to the nutrient servings per capsule to make sure you are reaching your daily targets and if it is realistic for you. This will also affect how long your supply will last which should also be taken into consideration.
